Everything has its purpose....

December 23, 2019 by Courtney Nichols

IF there is something that you should put on your list, one of those things would be, to go to South Africa. If you could then add a sub bullet it would be to specifically travel to the Mala Mala Game Reserve. Seeing wild life that up close and personal is witnessing God's type of magic. My family and I took a 4 day excursion to the Sable Camp located within the Reserve. The warmth of the staff will leave you with a happy and peaceful spirit, your bellies will be blessed with breakfast, lunch, and dinner fit for a king. The guides are beyond knowledgable, as this you can tell is their passion. Our tour guide Liam, was the best; and had such a connection with not only my family but the land too.  We got up every morning, at 6:30 with a glimmer of hope that we would catch the Big 5: Elephants, lions, leopards, water buffalos, and rhinos. They all blessed our presence in the first two days, under no obligation too.

On one of our drives, Liam was quite passionate about people discrediting Impala’s, "oh thats just an Impala!" they say. He explained; all the animals have a purpose that they lend to the cycle of  life in the wild. He went on, Impalas are the most abundant, they have a short (not the shortest) pregnancy time, being 6-7 months as they are regularly on the move. Their young are weaned quite quickly and reproduce shortly after (in my own research about 12-18 months). It is already ingrained within their biologics , they have to be on the run and replenish fast as they are also the number one food source for carnivores that stalk the plains.

As we caught elephants eating in the morning light I asked, and what would be theres? Liam replied "they are a keystone species, they have the ability to change the environment for all animals"; whether it be to create sink holes to dig up water underground or to leave a land barren so that new foliage can grow; they have that power." I had never thought about an elephant in that way. *Cues the trumpet*

Think about it, we all have our purpose, even at times if it seems insignificant...we all have something that we contribute to the full circle of ours, someone else’s, the worlds life. That is not to add some type of daunting pressure to not live your best life; but to understand your importance to the world, we are all necessary to be here and in some way are all connected.
